ACT to Image

An ACT file is a list of 256 individual RGB values encoded in binary. When given an ACT file from Istaria, the program will do its best to convert this file over to a gradient. It takes the list of RGB data and converts it to an array of values that are then converted directly into an image. The leftmost edge of the image corresponds to position 0 (darkest) in the ACT file, and the right to 255 (lightest).

The raw image is 256 pixels wide by 1 pixel tall, which can be hard to visually observe with the naked eye. The image is thus scaled up to 512x128 to make it easier to see. Istaria itself can use some PNG files as tints instead of ACT files - there is a folder for it - but they MUST be scaled down to 256x1. I've not tried to replace the files with larger ones, but presumably it won't work.

The images provided are primarily for visualization purposes or for generating an image base for you to work with in image editing programs to then convert back into ACT for the game.

Image to ACT

Any image uploaded to the program is immediately scaled to 256x1. I recommend using something in powers of 2 for the width and anything for the height, so long as the colors are consistent along the entire height of the image. Otherwise, the tint may not come out exactly as you like.

The left side of the image will correspond to the 0 (darkest) position in the ACT file, while the right will be the 255 position (lightest). Any transparency is lost in the conversion, so be sure not to use a transparent image - you'll likely get white or black spots.

Any image you upload is not stored to my server; the ACT file, however, is, unless it gets overwritten by someone else using the same filename. I periodically clean my files to clear up disk space, but I don't access the files in the /temp/ folder otherwise.
